Ever wondered why humans (mammals, by the way*) have two hands and two feet?
To learn to count, of course!
One of the simplest, most fun, and completely free ways to introduce your young child to counting can be done very early and easily using what we all naturally possess: two hands and two feet. Nature truly is well-designed!
This system is ultra-simple and can be practiced anywhere, anytime, without any props or cost. Here are the steps (it's very important to proceed step-by-step, without rushing or stressing):
1. First numbers: Learning to count to 5
We begin logically at the very start, counting on fingers: learning to recognize, name, and order the numbers from 1 to 5. (The concept of zero, a little more complex, can be introduced later.)
2. First addition and multiplication: Learning to count to 10
Next, we use the fingers of both hands. This naturally demonstrates addition (5 + 5) or multiplication (5 x 2), leading to the number 10.
3. Next addition and multiplication: Learning to count to 15
This is an engaging intermediate step: we add the toes of one foot to the total of our two hands' fingers: 10 + 5 = 15. Alternatively, you can think of it as multiplying the fingers of one hand or one foot by three: 5 x 3 = 15.
4. Final addition and multiplication: Learning to count to 20
Now, we count to 20 by incorporating all the digits on the body: 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 20. Or, by adding the fingers of both hands and both feet: 10 + 10 = 20. You can also illustrate this as multiplying the fingers of one hand (or foot) by four: 5 x 4 = 20, or by doubling the total fingers of both hands or both feet: 10 x 2 = 20.
5. First divisions
With this type of engaging exercise, you'll be amazed at how easily a toddler can learn to count to 20 and even begin to grasp the concepts of halves and quarters when dividing 20 by 2 or 4. What a fantastic start to their mathematical journey!
Have fun!
*Small note: While most mammals have five digits on each hand and foot, this isn't an absolute rule. Some mammals have different numbers of fingers or even limbs with reduced or absent digits.
