– According to a research conducted at New York University, the education level of mothers and fathers has a direct influence not only on their children’s academic performance, but also on the behaviors and social connections that lead a student to school success. This occurs as well with adopted kids or if the parents completed their education after the birth of the kids.

– This effect is often attributed to the “language gap”, by which educated parents talk generally more to their children who, as a result, develop a broader vocabulary and thereby are better prepared for school. In the NYU study, the researchers looked beyond the language gap to analyse the correlation between parents’ background and children’s achievement. The scientists found three categories of advantages for families with better educated parents: cognitive abilities, cultural knowledge, and social connections.
